Plymouth’s Inaugural Calligraphy Festival to Play Host to World-Renowned Penman Barbara Calzolari
The City of Plymouth is set to play host to a world-renowned master penwoman at Plymouth’s inaugural Calligraphy Festival this summer. Lyndsey Gribble, the founder of Wild Sea Calligraphy, has invited Master Penwoman Barbara Calzolari to attend the three-day Calligraphy Festival in August.
Barbara, who has completed work for the Pope and the G8 summit, will fly over from Bologna, Italy to teach the art of calligraphy at the festival which is held at Alma Yard in the heart of Plymouth’s east end near Sutton Harbour.
Barbara is one of a handful of Master Penmen in the world, so the visit is an enormous coup for the South West and indeed for the UK as a whole.
Lyndsey says, “Calligraphy isn’t just a beautiful art form – it’s a way of writing mindfully whilst creating something stunning at the same time. Barbara is a Pentel ambassador and Master Penwoman meaning she is the most phenomenal calligrapher and teacher - I'm so excited to learn from her here in Plymouth this August!”
The three-day festival celebrates mindfulness through mark-making and the art of calligraphy. Lucky participants will spend each of the three days with Barbara, learning how to create beautiful Spencerian calligraphy, mastering brush lettering and eventually putting their skills to the test with the magical Gothecized Italic script.
Tickets are being snapped up by those wishing to try something new, as well as calligraphy aficionados looking to further their practice. Not only will participants learn the art of modern calligraphy, but they’ll gain a new creative skill for life.
All materials will be supplied. Participants can choose a weekend ticket for £300 or cherry-pick the workshop which most appeals at a cost of £120. Spaces are limited and include hot and cold refreshments during the day, as well as a tasty treat from the local bakery.
