What is Modern Calligraphy?

For me I love all forms of calligraphy and whilst I’ll spend the rest of my life learning every possible style that I can find, I will never forget my adoration of modern calligraphy. It was the first style that I feel really connected with me, I learnt my basic strokes, mastered pen control and muscle memory and it gave me the confidence to try more difficult styles of lettering. But have you ever considered the origins of the calligraphy style that you are passionate about?

Modern calligraphy compared to most forms of lettering is a fairly young style of penmanship. I’d say it’s around 15 years old (although opinions will probably differ on this) and grew in popularity with is use in advertising, wedding stationery and the advent of social media, in particular Instagram. It really felt like its popularity exploded worldwide after 2010.

For me I always say that Modern Calligraphy is the rebellious younger sister of Copperplate Calligraphy. Where Copperplate is very structured and rules based Modern Calligraphy likes to break the rules and boundaries that older styles of lettering adhere to. Modern is a huge umbrella to lots of different styles from bounce lettering, spidery calligraphy, fine art calligraphy - the list is endless.

I personally believe that if you are a little unsure about what calligraphy you would prefer to write that modern is a great gateway into the world of calligraphy. You can master your pen control, work on your muscle memory and understand how to create strokes and connect lettering with a little less pressure than say Copperplate or Spencerian. Then once you feel ready you’ll be able to look ahead and confidently work on traditional styles of lettering.
