Enhancing Design Skills: Teaching Calligraphy to Graphic Design Students at Plymouth Arts University
It was fantastic to be asked back to teach Modern Calligraphy and the art of lettering to the Graphic Design and also Textile Design students at Plymouth Arts University this past fortnight. The students were really fun to teach and so engaged in learning a new script. I look forward to seeing what they create with this new skill.
One of the key benefits of teaching calligraphy to graphic design students is the development of a keen eye for detail. By meticulously crafting each stroke and curve, students learn to appreciate the nuances of letterforms and spacing. This attention to detail translates seamlessly into their digital work, elevating the quality of their designs.
Moreover, calligraphy encourages creativity and experimentation. In a world saturated with digital fonts, the ability to create custom lettering sets a designer apart. Whether it's a hand-lettered logo or a typographic poster, students explore new avenues for self-expression through calligraphy, infusing their designs with personality and charm.
