Teaching Kids Calligraphy
For the past couple of years I’ve held regular kids calligraphy workshops in my home town of Plymouth. There is a beautiful cafe called the Column Bakehouse at Ocean Studios located in the stunning setting of The Royal William Yard, a seafront series of very old nautical buildings. This is the most perfect venue for my kids calligraphy workshops. Parents bring their children down to the Makers Table and can sit down and relax on the surrounding sofas and tables while their mini ones are engrossed in an hour and a half of learning brush pen calligraphy. I swear you could hear a pin drop when this table of 10 or so children get going.
Why do I teach these workshops? Well it started as a way to give something back to the community, I charge the absolute minimum for these workshops so all children can attend. I can bring my own children along and they can learn about what mummy does at work and also my little girl absolutely loves to get involved and support other children to help them work through the workbook. After the first initial workshops I found I was getting asked lots about when I would hold my next so I always tried to book them in during a half term break so I could bring my own children along.
Now this year I have found that I couldn’t teach these workshops during the Easter break as I had planned and set up a Facebook Live workshop. My workbooks have been make free during the whole lockdown period so all that was required was a printer and some brush pens. The workshop was a great success, I didn’t realise how many would join in and at the moment I’ve had over three thousand views on the video. I really hope that these workbooks and videos are spreading a little bit of sunshine in homes over the UK.
